Analysis and Discussion
Having the opportunity to have open-honest discussions with two individuals who are passionate about what they put out into this world is truly food for the soul. Both Amrit and Kenefa are passionate about excelling at their chosen professions; they give their all despite the obstacles that may come their way. Amrit is an artist trying to maneuver the model arena while maintaining an artistic practice that remains true to herself. Kenefa, on the other hand, is an educator who makes it her mission to meet her students on every level, academically, socially, and emotionally.
Kenefa goes above and beyond for her students; she builds relationships and tries to connect what she teaches her young pupils to real-world connections. Through our dialogue, Kenefa discussed how it is essential to meet children where they are academically, socially, and emotionally. We must remember, as educators, that we can take a child to new heights by understanding that everyone is not on the same wavelength, so treating each child as an individual is essential. She also mentioned maintaining her composure when dealing with children struggling to regulate their emotions. Raising your voice can be easy but will not help resolve the issue. Kenefa found her community of educators at her place of work and has established a give-and-take relationship; they are each other's support system, lean on one another during those difficult times, and revel in the great moments as educators.
However, Amrit faces inconsistencies in securing modeling jobs that dramatically affect her productivity in creating her body of work because she does not have enough means to buy materials for her artistic practice. As a result, she has to resort to other measures to make ends meet, which is taking a toll on how she approaches her artwork. Despite these challenges, Amrit is optimistic about her future and committed to producing work that reflects her life experience. During our conservation, one thing I found insightful is that Amrit ensures that what she produces embodies her true self. She wants to create work that is authentically her and does not waiver from her history. I agree with this sentiment wholeheartedly because it is through those creations that we can better understand ourselves and others; art can unite us. I also admire her close-knit bond with her father, who helped shape her into the woman she is today; we stand on the backs of those who came before us. Another takeaway from my interview with Amrit is that having a community is essential; it creates a sense of belonging and can help you grow as an artist and an individual.
Kenefa and Amrit have endeared great strife in their respective professions but have risen above their ordeals. They have mustered up enough strength to take them through their daily woes, and despite the lack of resources in their possession, they are dedicated to being their best selves and strive to make something out of nothing. Their dedication propels them forward despite the hurdles that come their way. They both rely on a sense of community to help guide them on their journeys as a teacher and an artist. Having a community can be a great source of comfort when faced with difficulties; it also allows them to find a sense of belonging, and it provides them the space to connect with and share experiences, which can alleviate feelings of isolation and loneliness. Through community, one can learn and grow from one another.
Kenefa’s and Amrit’s perseverance has shown me that what you want to achieve in this life is attainable, but you must stay the course even though you may get a little weary. They stand firm in who they are and have never wavered from their beliefs. These individuals inspire me to push beyond my limits and reach my dreams despite what may come my way because life will always throw you curve balls, but what you do in that situation is what matters.
